Help communities grow stronger through education

Our Vision

Creating an opportunity for community in the isolated area where children at early stage of education can have the equality to embrace learning in order they can advance themselves to higher education and at the end develop their own community

In many places, kids don’t have easy access to schools. Some even grow up without basic reading or math skills. Through this program, we want to change that—by bringing learning directly to them.

Our Program in Babakan Banten

rumah belajar

Rumah Belajar Babakan Banten

There is no formal elementary school (SD) or early childhood education center (PAUD) in this area — only a community learning house serving children under 6 years old, though some older children also attend.

The learning house receives support from the Indonesian Red Crescent Foundation (Yayasan Bulan Sabit Merah Indonesia / BSMI) and several trail running communities, and follows the curriculum developed by Sekolah Literasi Indonesia (SLI).

At present, BSMI volunteers visit only once a month. In between visits, children rely on self-directed learning with the guidance of their parents.

The lack of basic learning resources — particularly whiteboards — and the infrequency of teacher visits have noticeably slowed the children’s development. Many are reaching elementary school age without yet being able to read or perform basic arithmetic.

What We Do?

Program Objectives

The aim of this assistance is to accelerate the learning progress of children under 12 years old, equipping them with reading and numeracy skills to prevent potential illiteracy:

  • Separating the learning focus between children with weak reading and numeracy abilities — Class A (pre-school period) — and children who are already proficient in reading and arithmetic — Class B.
  • Class A will be handled by the VELO Mengajar Team, with weekly visits every Saturday covering two sessions (morning and afternoon).
  • Class B will be handled by the Teacher Team in collaboration with SDN 04 Tegal Wangun, meeting twice a week in the afternoon.

Program Target

Over a 12-month period, both Class A and Class B are expected to demonstrate accelerated improvement in reading and numeracy skills, as well as adaptability to structured learning levels — enabling participating children to enroll in and keep up with formal education at the nearest elementary school.

Program Materials (Syllabus)

The curriculum follows the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) Curriculum or the Merdeka Curriculum for Elementary School, in accordance with guidelines from the Ministry of Education, Culture, Research, and Technology (KEMENDIKBUD RISTEK), with a focus on:

  • Mathematics
  • Bahasa Indonesia (Indonesian Language)
  • Natural and Social Sciences (IPA & IPS)

Program Development Evaluation — After 6 Months

The program began in early August 2024 and is scheduled to conclude at the end of July 2025, with evaluations conducted every 6 months. The following is a summary of progress after the first 6 months (August 2024 – February 2025):

  • The program has run on schedule, following the planned learning timetable, class division (Class A and Class B), and teacher assignments as initially designed.
  • Learning materials have been adapted from the Early Childhood Education (PAUD) curriculum for Class A and the Merdeka Curriculum for Class B. A mid-point curriculum review was conducted after 3 months, which also included an outdoor activity (camping).
  • Progress observed among pre-school children (Class A):
    1. Increased self-confidence compared to when they first joined the program
    2. Growing ability to recognize letters, numbers, and syllables, as well as perform basic arithmetic
    3. High motivation to learn, reflected in strong attendance rates (absences mostly due to illness)
  • Progress observed among elementary school-age children (Class B — Grades 2, 4, and 6):
    1. Growing confidence in their reading and numeracy abilities, overcoming the sense of inadequacy and embarrassment they previously felt when comparing themselves to peers
    2. Improved reading comprehension of syllables and sentences appropriate to their grade level
    3. Improved arithmetic skills (Mathematics), helping them close the gap with their classmates
